Story And Summary

This Netflix documentary revisits the Sheena Bora Murder case featuring previously unreleased footage, some fresh revelations, and compelling testimonies from individuals connected to the case, including the prime suspect, Indrani Mukherjea Mumbai Mirror called it a ‘Prime Time Murder’ and it truly was. When media baron Indrani Mukherjea was arrested for killing her sister Sheena Bora, who later turned out to be her daughter, it sent shockwaves across the nation. This story was tailor-made for the tabloids. It had everything - money, love, lies, deceit and a cold-blooded murder. But even nine years after the murder came to light, the case continues to be shrouded in mystery. The prosecution has been unable to conclusively establish Indrani’s guilt, resulting in all suspects being released on bail. Despite substantial evidence and reports suggesting Indrani's involvement, this documentary gives a platform to Indrani, as it features her in an extensive interview attempting to assert her innocence. Uraaz Bahl and Shaana Levy skillfully incorporate 20 critical phone conversations between Indrani, her ex-husband Peter, and his son Rahul, challenging many of her statements. Sure, there could have been a more direct line of questioning to her, while they had the chance. The documentary also seems to have missed the opportunity to probe deeper into the motive of the alleged murder and the and INX media’s complex money trail. There’s a passing mention of how the copious amount of money lying in Sheena’s account allegedly siphoned off by Indrani and Peter from INX media, could have been one of the main motives for the gruesome crime. Some journalist testimonies are either stating the obvious and repetitive or judgemental and opinionated. Instead, it would have been more balanced to have at least some representation from Peter’s side of the family as well. Spread across 4 episodes, the documentary essentially revisits the entire case through the eyes of Indrani’s daughter Vidhie Mukherjea, some of the journalists who covered the case and Indrani’s defense lawyer. While the case is still fresh in our memory, the usage of a lot of unseen footage, some shocking new revelations and a very clever edit, surely help give a fresh perspective to the complicated family dynamics between the Mukherjeas. It also delves deeper into Indrani’s traumatic past (as per her), while giving a real peek into her relationship with her three children. What also makes this documentary very engaging are its top-notch technical aspects. From detailed production design (by Akash Gautam) and graphics, to impeccable cinematography (John W. Rutland) and a very telling background score (Joel Crasto), it’s pitch-perfect. It’s also commendable how the makers have been able to condense such a voluminous amount of data and all the twists and turns of the case into a sharp and concise docuseries. If you’ve keenly followed this case, like this reviewer, ‘The Indrani Mukherjea Story Buried Truth’ may not shed new light on the truth. But if you’re willing to read between the lines and hear the unsaid, this docuseries is indeed a powerful retelling of one of India’s most baffling murder mysteries.
