Story And Summary
When Russians target 16 stolen nuclear missiles on 16 cities of America, it’s a tough solo battle ahead for JJ Collins to launch interceptors from a nuclear defense base in the middle of the Pacific.
'Interceptor' is precisely the reason why the OTT platform on which it is currently streaming is registering a southward trajectory of its subscriber base. In a nutshell, 'Interceptor' is torture, and if you are able to bear its entire length, it turns out to be an insufferable pain. Executive produced by Chris Hemsworth, this action-adventure turns out to be cold turkey. This film is another in the line that goes on to sing paeans about how great America is and how Americans are capable of doing everything.
When Russians take charge of 16 stolen nuclear missiles and are ready to nuke 16 cities in America, only one thing stands between them and victory - JJ Collins (Elsa Pataky). When she is unceremoniously shunted out of her dream job at the Pentagon, she finds herself in charge of a nuclear defense base in the Pacific, which is an interceptor base. Alexander Kessel (Luke Bracey), a former US military intelligence officer, is at the base to neutralize the interceptors so that the nuclear attack is conducted smoothly. When Alexander encounters Collins at the base, a change in plan ensues.
It’s evident from the film that Chris Hemsworth has actually given a golden chance to his actress wife Elsa Pataky, but somehow other departments of the film were not in tune with his vision. Just to lend that starry appeal, he even appears in the film briefly in a hat and thick beard, cheering for the woman who is about to save America (also his wife in real life). This film actually turns out to be a substandard product and puts forth a situation where Die Hard meets Panic Room. More than the performances of the actors, this film relies heavily on action, and there is nothing in the film that you have not seen before. It's all there: red buttons, countdown timers, the President and US Army staff echelons keeping a close watch on the situation. The visual effects look jarring in many places, and you wonder if we are in 2022.
The only things that keep you engaged in this otherwise dull affair are the action sequences performed by Elsa Pataky. While action has been her forte and we have seen her perform stunts in the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, in this film she comes on her own and takes it to the next level. Luke Bracey in the role of Alexander Kessel looks like a suave villain, and he turns out to be a fitting antagonist to Pataky’s character.
It does make you think at the end of how this film was even greenlighted by the mandarins of the streaming platform. There is nothing in the film that could be termed subtle. It’s one of those flicks that are mindless fun and can be watched when you are back home after a long tiring day and are able to bear anything on the tube. Don’t waste time in pressing the skip button.
